Johnny Appleseed is the nickname of a man whosereal name was John Chapman, an American pioneerwho planted large numbers of apple trees along the early frontier. Nothing is known about hischildhood. According to legend, for almost fifty years, Johnny Appleseed walked throughPennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. Everywhere he went he carried bags of apple seeds and plantedthem. He also gave apple seeds and apple saplings to everyone he met. He is said to haveplanted thousands of seeds during his travels. Thousands of settlers came to know this strange, lonely man. He had a tin pot as a hat, a coffee sack as a shirt, and no shoes, looking like ascarecrow. Some nights he spent at farmhouses, and told stories for his supper. Other times hecamped out alone in the fields and woods. No harm ever came to Johnny Appleseed in his lonelytravel through the wilderness. The Indians knew him and treated him as a friend, and eventhe wild animals left him alone. Johnny Appleseed was a religious man, and he loved nature. Hebelieved it his duty to go up and down the land planting apple seeds. He wanted Americans toenjoy the beauty and delicious fruit of the apple trees.

There was once a wise old woman who lived back inthe hills. All the children used to come back and askher questions. She always gave the right answers.

There was a naughty little boy among the day he caught a tiny bird and held it in his cupped hands. Then he gathered his friendsaround. He said, "Let's trick the old woman. I'll ask her what I'm holding in my hands. Ofcourse, she'll answer that I have a bird. Then I will ask her if the bird is living or dead. If shesays the bird is dead, I'll open my hands and let the bird fly away. If she says the bird is alive,I'll quickly crush it and show her the dead bird. Either way, she'll be wrong."

The children agreed that this was a clever plan. Up the hill they went to the old woman's hut.

"Granny, we have a question for you," they all shouted.

"What's in my hands?" asked the little boy.

"Well, it must be a bird," replied the old woman.

"But is it living or dead?" demanded the excited boy.

The old woman thought for a moment and then replied, "It is as you will, my child."
