自私的巨人
Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden.
每天下午，孩子们放学回来，总会去巨人的花园里玩耍。
It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. "How happy we are here!" they cried to each other.

One day the Giant came back. 1-1e had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.

He was a very selfish Giant.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it. They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. "How happy we were there," they said to each other.

Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the selfish Giant it was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom. Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep. The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year round." The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver. Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came. He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the chimney-pots down. "This is a delightful spot," he said, "we must ask the Hail on a visit." So the Hail came. Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he brokemost of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.

I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming," said the selfish Giant,as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; "I hope there will be a change in the weather."

But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant's garden she gave none. "He is too selfish," she said. So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind, and the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced about through the trees.

Pippi was sure that her mother was now up in Heaven, watching her little girl through a peephole in the sky, and Pippi often waved up at her and called, "Don't you worry about me. But Pippi was absolutely certain that he would come would never believe that he had drowned; she was sure he had floated until he landed on an island inhabited by cannibals. And she thought he had become the king of all the cannibals and went around with a golden crown on his head all day along.

Once there was a tree…and she loved a little boy. Every day the boy would come and he wouldgather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the would climb up hertrunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree verymuch… the tree was happy.

Then one day the boy came to the tree and the tree said."Come, Boy, come and climb up mytrunk and swing from my branches and eat my apples and play in my shade and be happy."
有一天男孩来到大树旁，大树说:"来吧，孩子，爬到我的树干上，在树枝上荡秋千，吃几个苹果，再到阴凉里玩一会儿，你会开心的!"
"I am too big to climb and play." said the boy. "1 want to buy things and have fun. I want somemoney. Can you give me some money?"
"我已经大了，不爱爬树玩儿了，"男孩说，"我想买些东西，想找些乐子。我需要钱，你能给我些钱吗?"
"I'm sorry," said the tree, "but I have no money. I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples,Boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy."

And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away.

But the boy stayed away for a long time…and the tree was sad.

And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy and she said, "Come,Boy,climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy."

I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy. "I want a house to keep me warm," he said. "I wanta wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me a house?"

And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house. And the treewas happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time.

And when he came back, the tree was so happy that she could hardly speak. "Come,Boy," shewhispered, "come and play."

"I am too old and sad to play," said the boy. "I want a boat that will take me far away fromhere. Can you give me a boat?"

"Cut down my trunk and make a boat," said the tree. "Then you can sail away and be happy."

And after a long time the boy came back again, "I am sorry, Boy," said the tree,'but I havenothing left to give you-my apples are gone."

"My teeth are too weak for apples," said the boy.

"I am too old to swing on branches," said the boy.

"I don't need very much now," said the boy,"just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired."

"Well," said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, "Well, an old stump is goodfor sitting and resting. Come Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest."

And the boy did.
