Robin Hood was told that Friar Tuck, who lived alonein a valley, was the best fighter in the world, at leastas good as Robin Hood himself. Hearing this, RobinHood went to the valley, where he found the Friar bythe river. Robin Hood came up to him and said, “Carry me over the river, Friar, or else your life willbe in danger.” The Friar said nothing but took upRobin Hood and carried him on his back to the otherside of the river. The Friar gently laid him down on the bank and said to Robin Hood, “It is nowyour turn. Carry me over the river, or else you will regret.” Robin Hood took the Friar on hisback, without saying a word to him, carried him over the water, and laid him gently down onthe bank. Then he turned to the friar and ordered him carry him over the river once more. TheFriar smiled and took him up, but when he came in the midst of the stream, he shook him offhis shoulders, and said to him, “Now choose, whether you will sink or swim.”

When Robin Hood and the Friar swam to the bank, they began to fight. Robin Hood first shootat the Friar. Though none of the arrows missed the mark, the Friar was not hurt because hisarmours protected him. Then they drew out their swords and continued their fight. They foughtfor hours but could not hurt each other. At last Robin Hood asked the Friar to stop for amoment and allow him to blow his horn.

Robin Hood took his horn and sounded it three times. Soon fifty men with their bows came tohis help. Seeing this, the Friar asked Robin Hood to let him whistle three times. He put his fistto his mouth, and whistled so loudly that the place echoed with the sound. At the sound fiftyfierce dogs appeared and came upon Robin Hood and his men, and tore their coats into men fought bravely and kept the dog back. The Friar admired Robin Hood and his men fortheir strength and courage. He especially marvelled at Little John’s skill in fighting, and askedhim who he was. Little John said, “I am Little John, and belong to Robin Hood, who has foughtwith you for hours; and if you will not surrender you will die.” The Friar, seeing that it wasimpossible for him to deal with so many at once, agreed to join Robin Hood’s band.

Lake is her favorite. She hopes one day her dreamwill come true. She has taken ballet lessons and allher teachers confirm she is a good student.

One day she saw an advertisement that a famous ballerina troupe will be performing in herhometown.

Her thoughts ran wild, "I must meet up with the leader of the troupe and show him my skills, "she murmured to herself.

She dressed herself in her ballerina costume and managed to evade the guards and hid in thedressing room.

To her luck the leader entered and she timidly knocked at the door.

She bravely approached him and handed him a bunch of red roses and in her excitement thethorns pricked her hand but she did not make much ado about the pain.

The leader observed her action as she told him her dream. "Alright, you dance and I will giveyou my verdict."

But half way through the dance he stopped her and said, "I'm sorry you're not good enough!"

On hearing this Li Xie ran as fast as her legs could carry her and was ashamed. She gave up herdream.

Many years later, she heard that the same ballet troupe was performing in her town again.

Bitter memories of the leader's harsh words came flooding back to her.

This time she was determined to find out Why the leader had told her she was not goodenough when all her teachers thought otherwise.

This was his reply, "I tell this to every student." She angrily shot back, "You've ruined my life!一Then she got a further shock, "

"I remember your gift of roses and how the thorns had pricked your fingers but you carried onbravery.

If you only had treated ballet like that and did not give up so easily; therefore, you stilldeserve my verdict! "
