The new mayor of Hillsdale, Michigan, is a man of the people, ready to listen to their problems, but only until 6 p.m. Then he has to do his homework. Michael Sessions,18, beat former mayor Douglas Ingles, 51, by just two votes and became the new mayor of Hillsdale. He is America's youngest mayor.

As Sessions was too young to enter the election in the spring of 2005,he registered to vote on Sept.22, one day after his 18-year-old birthday. The day after that he started his write-in campaign, which means he should persuade voters to remember his name and write it by hand on the voting ballots(选票).

To help get his name known, Sessions earned$700 by selling apples over the summer. He spent the money on posters and put them on the Hillsdale's lawns.

Sessions’ month-long campaign included going door to door, explaining his ideas of the town's future in the kitchens of his neighbors. "They'd look at me, and say ‘How old are you again? How much experience do you have?’ And I say ‘I’m still in high School.’” he said. Sessions promised Hillsdale's voters he would renew local economy. “I was hopeful the whole time,” he explained. One day he spent so long out on the streets knocking on the doors that he ended up in a hospital emergency room.

Sessions said that his schoolwork will not get in the way of his job as a mayor. “From 7:50a.m. to 2:30p.m., I’11 be a student. From 3 to 6, I’ll be the mayor of Hillsdale," he said.

“He did a very brave thing that couldn't have been easy for him to do." said Jack Vettel, a councilman in Hillsdale, a city of 8,200 about 75 miles southwest of Detroit.” He does care about this town. He’s been here all his life.”

Two weeks after the opening ceremony, the Games are over. The last of the three hundred gold medals has been awarded and the flag of the winners have been raised for the last time.

The final event is the closing ceremony. It is a sad occasion because the extreme excitement is over, and it will not happen again for four years. Those who have made friends will have to say good-bye, perhaps for ever. It is also a happy occasion because the competition is over and the athletes can really show their friendship for one another.

The closing ceremony is rather like the opening. But now the Olympic flame goes out and the Olympic flag, with its five rings, is lowered. The person who closes the Games calls upon the youth of the world to meet again in four years time. The scoreboard lights up with the name of the city for the next Games and the band starts to play. The celebration starts.

All the athletes try to be at the closing ceremony. They have forgotten all their fears and worries. It does not matter whether they have done well or not. All the teams walk round the Stadium together. Everybody in the Village clears up and gets ready to leave. Everyone is hunting for local products. People exchange track suits, hats, running vests and so on. There is a last chance to take photographs and get addresses of new friends. Then each team starts its journey home.

You might not know it, but there is something wonderful at your fingertips. You can make people happier, healthier and more hard-working just by touching their arms or holding their hands.

Doctors say that body touch is a kind of medicine that can work wonders. When people are touched, the quantity of hemoglobin—a type of matter that produces the red color in blood—increases greatly. This results in more oxygen reaching every part of the body and the whole body benefits. In experiments, bottle-fed baby monkeys were separated from their mothers for the first ten days of life. They became sad and inactive. Studies showed the monkeys were more probable to become ill than other babies that were allowed to stay with their mothers.

Human babies react in much the same way. Some years ago, a scientist noticed that some well-fed babies in a clean nursery become week. Yet babies in another nursery were growing healthily, even though they ate 1ess well and were not kept as clean. The reason, he concluded, was that they often had touches from nurses.

Experiments show that most people like being touched. And nearly all doctors believe touch helps to reduce patients’ fear of treatment. Of course there is time when a touch is not welcome. But even if we don’t 1ike being touched, a smile can make us feel better. Smiling increases blood flow and starts the production of “happy brain’’ chemicals.

So let’s have a big smile and don't forget to keep “in touch”.

49. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut high-way crashes.

Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent chevrons(人字型), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.

Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D. C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes. Excessive speed plays a major role in as fifth all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards(危险地带)are the greatest-curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.

Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.

Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane to be narrow. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

56. The passage mainly discuss____________.

A. a new way of highway speed controlB. a new pattern for painting highways

C. a new approach to training driversD. a new type of optical illusion

57. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that____________.

A. they should avoid speed-related hazardsB. they are driving in the wrong lane

C. they should slow their speedD. they are approaching the speed limit

58. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former____ .

A. can keep drivers awakeB. can cut roads accidents in half

C. will have a long effect on driversD. will look more attractive

59. The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to________.

A. try out the Japanese methods in certain areas

B. change the roads signs across the country

C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons

D. repeat the Japanese road patterns

60. What does the author say straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?

A. They are falling out of use in the United States.

B. They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.

C. They are applicable only on broad roads.

D. They can't be applied successfully to traffic circles.
