I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career (职业).

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in
the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification (资格证书)if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.

Animals can move from place to place, but plants cannot. When an animal is under attack, it can run away or fight back.. Plants certainly cannot run away, and they lack teeth and claws. But plants can defend themselves by using both physical and chemical means.

Some plants have their own ways to keep animals away. For example, the leaves of the holly plant have sharp spines (刺) that discourage grass-eating animals. Holly leaves on lower branches have more spines than leaves on upper branches. This is because the lower leaves are easier for most animals to reach.

Some plants, such as the oak tree, have thick and hard leaves that are difficult for animals to eat. Some grasses may contain a sandy material; eating such grasses wears down the animal's teeth.

Many plants also have chemical defenses. Some plants produce chemicals that taste bitter or cause an unpleasant reaction. Some plants may fight against an attack by increasing the production of these chemicals. When a caterpillar (毛虫) bites a tobacco leaf, the leaf produces a chemical messenger. This messenger sends to the roots the information to produce
more nicotine. The higher levels of nicotine discourage the caterpillar.

Many plants depend on both physical and chemical defenses. A certain plant in China, for instance, has prickly (多刺的) leaves, and each prickle contains poisonous venom (毒液). A single experience with this kind of plant will teach an animal to stay away from it in the future.

64. The holly plant has more spines on the lower leaves because most animals________.

A. are not tall enough B. like the lower leaves only

C. are not clever enough D. can get the lower leaves easily

65. To defend themselves, oak trees use________.

A. chemical means B. physical means

C. bitter chemicals D. sandy materials

66. How does tobacco protect itself against an attack from a caterpillar?

A. Its leaves fight against the attack by physical means.

B. Its roots send a messenger to discourage the caterpillar.

C. Its roots increase the production of nicotine when it is attacked.

D. Its leaves produce poisonous sand to drive the caterpillar away.

67. What would be the best title for this passage?

A. Plants and Animals B. How Plants Defend Themselves

C. Attacks and Defenses D. How Animals Eat Plant Leaves

(D)

While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon(现象)is commonly known as “Empty Nest Syndrome”(空巢综合症).

In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response(回应)in time for their aged parents living by themselves.

The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “distant parent phenomenon”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. Our society has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”.

rding to the passage, the loneliness of aged parents is mainly caused by _________.

r earlier experience of feeling lonely

unfavorable living conditions in their native countries

common worry about their income

geographical distance between parents and children

young people have gone abroad, leaving their aged parents behind, to _________.

in the countries with more money

a better place for their aged parents

ize their dreams in foreign countries

young people go abroad, _________.

do not hold to the value of duty at all

can give some help to their parents back home

cannot do what they should for their parents

believe what they actually do is right

the last paragraph, we can infer that ________.

situations in the developed and developing countries are different

B. “Empty Nest Syndrome” has arrived unexpectedly in our society

dren will become independent as soon as they go abroad

aged parents are not fully prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”

When Lew Alcindor was 13, and obviously still growing, a group of schools began offering him scholarships (奖学金) . The Alcindors decided to send their only child to Power Memorial Academy, a small school on Manhattan’s West Side.

At Power, Alcindor came under the control of Coach Jack Donohue, a strict young man who already gained his fame as one of the best coaches in the city. Donohue brought Alcindor along slowly. As a first-year student, the boy was not able to do much but wave his long skinny arms and shoot a basket now and then. But by the second year, when he was 15 years old and nearly 7 feet tall, Alcindor was quick and skillful enough to make the high school All-American team and to lead Power to an undefeated season.

From then on he simply got better. Some rival coaches (对方教练)used to take their teams quickly away from the floor before Power warmed up so that their players would not see him any sooner than they had to. Wearing size 16D shoes and sucking a lollipop (棒棒糖), Alcindor would loosen up by starting his leaping lay-ups (擦板球). Then he would casually shoot the ball with either hand, to the delight of the fans.

When reporters and photographers began to follow Alcindor closely, Donohue protected his boy firmly. He simply ordered Lew to talk to no member of the press, and this suited Lew fine. He was not comfortable talking to grown-ups, perhaps because he towered over them. Discouraged photographers began following him in secret as though he were an easily-frightened giraffe. Once after ducking into a subway to escape, Alcindor told a friend that it was all becoming like policemen and robbers. “People want you not for yourself,” Donohue warned him, “but because you’re a basketball player. Don’t forget that.”

72. Many schools offered Alcindor scholarships because_________.

was young was hardworking

was tall for his age was skillful at playing basketball

73. Which of the following best describes Donohue
as a young coach?

ous, popular and slow , skillful and successful

, powerful and undefeated -known, strict and experienced

74. Why did some rival coaches take their teams away from the floor before Power warmed up?

r teams refused to play Power

r teams feared to see Alcindor

r teams would lose courage

r teams would lose interest

75. What does the last paragraph mainly discuss?

Donohue protected Alcindor from the press

Alcindor disliked meeting reporters

the press followed Alcindor closely

the public wanted Alcindor badly

1、情景作文:

During the seven-day holiday,my family made a trip to Jinhaihu Park for an outing.

We took a tourist express and got there on the morning of October 3rd and we decided to stay for that night at a local holiday inn. During the day,we rowed a boat on the lake, enjoying the
beautiful scenery around, played games at the pleasure ground and climbed the hills there. We had picnics by the side of the water. On the next morning,we left the holiday in and set off for Shisanling Reservoir. We stayed there for about 3 hours and then started on our journey back home. Both my family and I really had a good time.

It was a pity that we were stuck in a long heavy traffic jam on the way back though it reduced little of our pleasure.
