If you are a booklover, you may be interested in the following.

Dietland, by Sarai Walker

If you're sick of the stick-thin and perfectly slim models of society today, Dietland is for you. The funny novel follows Plum Kettle, an over-weight advice journalist who answers fan mail for a teen girls’ website. She’s convinced that her life won’t really start until she saves up enough money for her weight-loss operation — when she’ll finally look like the ‘‘perfect’, woman. But after she gets pulled into a series of adventures with a group of women who live life on their own terms, she begins to reconsider her own opinions of what “beauty” really is.

Orhan’s Inheritance, by Aline Ohanesian

After Orhan’s Turkish grandfather dies, he learns that while he’s taken over his grandfather’s successful business, the house that’s been in his family for generations was not left to him. Instead, it went to an 87-year-old woman who lives in L.A. that no one in his family has ever heard of. To get to the bottom of this, Orhan travels to L.A. to meet with the woman. It’s then that he uncovers the secrets of his family.

Aqeela Asifi, who escaped to Pakistan as a young woman, has spent her life teaching other Afghan refugees (难民) her efforts, Ms. Asifi has won the 2015 UNHCR Nansen Refugee award. She also gets $100,000 to help pay for her education projects.

Asifi faced many problems in Afghanistan before she escaped to Pakistan. Resources were limited and education for women was discouraged. However, she persuaded parents to send their daughters to school in a tent at the Kot Chandana refugee village. Since then, Ms. Asifi has guided more than a thousand refugee girls through their primary education. “When 1 began to educate Afghan girls, I could not have imagined that one day it will win me this award. I cannot express my happiness,” she said.

Nearly half school-aged Afghan refugee children don't attend school in Pakistan. Ms. Asifi was a teacher in Kabul when she escaped with her family in 1992. “In Afghanistan I was teaching both boys and girls,’’ she said. “When I left Afghanistan and ended up in this refugee village with my family, I was sad to find out there were no facilities (设施)here, particularly for women and girls.”

In the refugee camp she began teaching a small number of students in her tent. She made teaching materials by hand. Her tent school has led to the opening of several permanent (永久) schools in the village. These schools teach more than one thousand children. Support from the local government and non-governmental organizations helped make these new schools possible.

Ms. Asifi is a mother of six children. She
has worked hard to pay for their education. She spends almost all her income to send her sons to Kabul University. But seeking higher education for her four daughters is difficult. There is not enough money or secondary schools for girls in the village.

The Afghan teacher hopes more and more children will receive an education in Afghanistan. She hopes her home country becomes better known for higher levels of education, instead of war. “I want my goal to be introduced in parts of Afghanistan where old traditions and customs still prevent parents from sending their daughters to outdoor schools,” she said.

When men get together, they seldom talk about their feelings or inner thoughts. However, they talk about a lot, like their newest computer, how to repair their car, or even business.

Talk might move to the best place to find fish or women, jump to computer games, then continue to the sport of the season. They also like to tell jokes each other and spend a fair amount of time playing one-up and boasting (吹牛). Men seldom call each other to chat.

When man meets woman, he usually wants to make a good impression. Many single men try hard to carry on amusing, fun, and pleasant conversations. They use conversation to discover her interests and feelings in order to learn how to be attractive to her.

Some men, either out of nervousness or ignorance, spend most of the time talking about themselves, often appearing to brag about their achievements or talk endlessly about their problems or work. Even the quietest man talks to his woman when love is new.

When women get together, they talk about feelings and relationships, their work, and their family. They enjoy talking but also want the give and take of talk, then listen. Women often call each other to chat. Conversation is an important part of most women’s lives.

As relationships progress, however, many a man turns on the television and forgets how to talk. This raises anger and cry from his woman partner who says, “You never talk to me anymore.” Some men start talking. Many, however, mainly discuss their own achievements and problems.

When the woman starts talking about her favorite subjects: feelings, family, relationships, friends and her work, many men lose interest or bring the conversation back to themselves. Pretty soon, the man is back to staring at the television each night, wondering where his relationship has gone. The woman is talking to her friends, mom, sister, or neighbor, often about that very relationship and how she is hurting.

31. What is the best title of this passage?

A. How a man makes a good impression to a woman.

B. Good relationship between men and women.

C. Talking, the women’s main tool in communication.

D. Men talk; women talk; do they talk together?

What would happen today, if there was an accident at your workplace? Would employees know what to do? Would the injured person get the best possible care?

When an accident happens, a first aid program that meets the requirements of the law and is made to the type and size of the workplace can really make the difference between life and death, or between recovery and lasting disablement (伤残).

Employers should make sure that all employees know where emergency information is posted at the work place. The emergency notice should show the phone numbers of the closest ambulance service, fire/rescue unit, police station, and hospital. The amount of time it takes to look up one of these important numbers can make a big difference to a seriously injured person. The place of first aid equipment and rescue equipment should also be posted.

All work places should have a person with first aid or medical training in case of an emergency. First aid equipment and supplies, including a variety of dressings and instruments, as well as an up-to-date first aid book, should be stored where they can be reached quickly and easily in case of an accident. These supplies should be inspected frequently, making sure they are kept in sanitary (卫生)and usable condition and re-stored after use. Larger workplaces may need more than one, fully-equipped first aid bag.

In lonely work places, emergency supplies and an action plan are especially important. At least one person trained in emergency first aid should always be on-site (现场j). If first aid is not given properly, it can sometimes hurt rather than help an injured person, or even be harmful to the person giving the first aid. All workers should know who is trained to give first aid on-site, where the emergency first aid equipment is put, and what medical professional or medical instruments should be found if a medical emergency happens.

32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. The importance of a proper first aid program.

B. The necessity to make a first aid program at the workplace.

C. The requirements of the law about a first aid program.

D. Difference between the type and size of the workplace.

33. What should you do for a seriously injured person?

A. Inform the present conditions to the employers.

B. Give first aid to him right away all by yourself.

C. Look up and call the emergency telephone numbers quickly.

D. Run to the rescue center to get the first aid equipment.

34. First aid equipment and supplies are stored in work places in order to_______.

A. be reached quickly and used to rescue in time

B. meet the requirements of the government

C. deal with the inspection of higher departments

D. make a medical training for the employees

35. According to the text all workers are required to_______.

A. be responsible for the result of the injured person

B. know the exact place for the emergency first aid equipment

C. be trained to give first aid to the injured in an accident

D. be far away from the accident place without permission

Developing a better relationship with parents is important for most of the people._36 For example, some adult children believe that parents are not able to understand their life styles while some believe parents want to control their lives. Here arc some tips on how to develop a better relationship with your parents.

37 Love your parents for who they are, not for who you
want them to be. Realize how much they have done in order to give you the best life possible. Recognize the difference in your respective ages. Priorities (优先处理的事)change as a person grows older and wiser. Respect the way they live and in return, they will respect the way you live.

Take your parents’ advice seriously. Listen to their stories and learn from their past experiences. Parents don’t want you to make the same mistakes they did and it hurts them to see their children go through any difficult times. Realize that your parents are not trying to control you. 38

39 Make an effort to spend quality time with your parents. Remember to visit them as often as you can. Get involved in their activities. Parents love to share the excitements of their lives with their children. Listen to their adventures, as parents often want their children to hear their latest news.

Make an effort to communicate with your parents more often. 40 Ask for advice when it’s needed. Listen and accept their concerns. Try to use statements such as, “I will certainly consider what you just said”, or “1 would love to hear more about this in person.” Communicating openly will make them have more confidence in you.

A. Manage your time better.

B. Share the parts of your life with them.

C. It’s never too late to express your love.

D. But you need to plan another visit time.

E. They only want to tell you what is the best for you.

F. Understand the difference between you and your parents.

G. However, becoming older creates some distance from parents.
