Donald Trump waded into controversy again on Tuesday after suggesting that supporters of the Second Amendment could somehow block Hillary Clinton from appointing liberal justices to the Supreme Court, presumably by using their right to bear arms.

“Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish the Second Amendment,” Mr Trump told the crowd. “If she gets to pick her judges, [there is] nothing you can do folks. Although [for] the Second Amendment people maybe there is, I don’t know. But I tell you what, that will be a horrible day if Hillary gets to put her judges [in].”

Shortly after Mr Trump spoke, the New York billionaire’s campaign sent an email to reporters entitled “Trump Campaign Statement on Dishonest Movement”, alleging that Mr Trump had not been calling for gun owners to shoot Mrs Clinton or any justice that she might nominate.

“It’s called the power of unification — Second Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power,” Jason Miller, Mr Trump’s senior communications adviser, said, clarifying Mr Trump’s comment. “And this year, they will be voting in record numbers, and it won’t be for Hillary Clinton, it will be for Donald Trump.”

Mr Trump’s comments came just one day after his campaign said he had managed to get his campaign back on track with a policy-heavy speech in Detroit where he laid out some of his key economic policy proposals, including lowering the corporate tax rate, and attempted to recalibrate his message after two weeks of falling poll numbers and a string of controversies, including a dispute with a Muslim-American military family.

Yet his comments on Tuesday appeared to undo some of his efforts, with media attention again focusing on Mr Trump’s remark, which some Democrats and even some Republicans claimed amounted to a death threat.

“What Trump is saying is dangerous. A person seeking to be president of the United States should not suggest violence in any way,” Robby Mook, Mrs Clinton’s campaign manager, said.
