Guangdong and Sichuan embroideries feature popularmotifs, such as a peacock spreading its tail, a magpie on the branch of a plum tree, pines andcranes as symbols of long life,two dragons playing with a ball，and a phoenix and peony. Theembroidery items have varied themes ： Some are romantic and exaggerative,others reflectthe reality,or are vivid and true to life. Both are of practical and ornamental uses.

The Wenxiu Department was in charge of embroidery in the Song ng the reign of Emperor Hui Zong，they divided embroidery into four categories：mountains and waters,pavilions,people,and flower and birds. During this period,the art ofembroidery came to its zenith and reputed workers popped up. Even intellects joined thisactivity,and embroidery was divided into two functions：art for daily use and art for art’s sake.

The embroidery ischaracteristic of smooth and even. Though a wide range of designs,the most common oneson the Yue Embroidery are birds worshipping the Sun ,the dragons and the phoenixes. The YueEmbroidery includes the Guang and Chao branches,which are also typical of their own stitchingstyles.
