Nails in the Fence

By Audrey Witturp

There once was a little boy who had a bad father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every Time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day he had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into fence.

Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said," You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the you say thing in anger, they have a scar just like these can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say 'I am sorry ', the wound is still there. A verbal wound is as bad as physical one."

Friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us. Let's be kind to one another.

Treasure Starfish----

Once upon a time there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the he got closer he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?"The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean.""I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?""The sun is up, and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die.""But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach, and

starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference!"The young man

listened politely, then bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said,"It made a difference for that one."There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future. We must each find our starfish. And if we throw our stars wisely and well, the world will be blessed.

Time to Learn

A young but earnest Zen student approached his teacher, and asked the Zen Master:If I work very hard and diligently how long will it take for me to find Zen.”

The Master thought about this, then replied, “Ten years.”

The student then said,“But what if I work very, very hard and really apply myself to learn fast — How long then?”Replied the Master, "Well, twenty years."

But, if I really, really work at it. How long then?” asked the ty years,” replied the Master. But, I do not understand,” said the disappointed student.

"At each time that I say I will work harder, you say it will take me do you say that?”Replied the Master, “When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path.”
