Jack Ma is arguably China's most famous -- and successful -- entrepreneur. Though he's nolonger running Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. -- the e-commerce company he founded that isgearing up for a multi-billion dollar initial public offering -- Mr. Ma is still proselytizing thebenefits of entrepreneurship.

So what's his advice for fledgling entrepreneurs ready to start their own businesses? OnSunday, in front of thousands of young people in Hong Kong at the 'Youth Business Projectconference, ' Mr. Ma shared his advice:

--There are business opportunities in 80% of industries in China, including the 'green' orenvironmentally friendly industry. Whenever people have complaints or are dissatisfied withsomething, that equals a business opportunity.

--Avoid starting businesses with good friends. But once you're running a business, try yourbest to be good friends with your business partner.

--Always remember the passion you've had at the very beginning of starting the r start a business just to make Money.

--A Tai Chi practitioner for years, Mr. Ma used the Chinese practice as a metaphor for runninghis business. 'The idea of practicing Tai Chi also applies in the commercial world, ' he told theaudience. Tai Chi emphasizes that 'your attitude in heart affects your shape or form on theoutside, ' said Mr. Ma.

Mr. Ma opened a Tai Chi school with Chinese action star Jet Li in Hangzhou, where Alibaba wasfounded in 1999, by 18 people led by Mr. Ma, a former English teacher.

Running a business is never easy. Even Mr. Ma, who brought the company to become China'se-commerce giant with 24, 000 employees now, said he made numerous mistakes along hisjourney in building the business. 'The biggest mistake is yet to come, ' he said, half-jokingly.

How to Really Start a Business (or Why You Don't Need Money to Make Money)

Everyone has excuses about why they can't (actually won't) earn more money. A commonexcuse is, "I need money to make money".

You and I know that's a myth (you do know that's a myth, right?), but most people take it asa truism.

A lot of people think they need tens of thousands of dollars to get in on a franchise, or putcash down for a rental property, or buy into some silly multilevel marketing scheme.

The fact is, there are plenty of ways to make money without the need for a pile of cash — asChris Guillebeau's recent book, The $100 Startup, covers. The first step is to realize that thereare always multiple solutions to any problem, whether it's making more money, building yourretirement nest egg/strongbox, or bartering for broccoli.

Must-have tools for creating a business on the cheap are:

A bootstrapping mindset: How can you get or do something for free or extremely low cost?Again, creative brainstorming and flexible thinking will help you figure out how to accomplisha task on a shoestring. Check out some more specific bootstrapping principles to get youstarted.

Small steps and a willingness to experiment: This is the iterative, lean startup approach, where you try something small & fast, learn from it, and improve. What? You haven'theard of the lean startup approach? Well, start reading up on it. It'll save you from wastingtime and money, and reduce startup frustration and misery.

Market validation: Again, from the lean startup/customer development paradigm, make surethat you're offering something that people want and will pay for. What what? You haven't heardof customer development either? Not a problem. There's great info out there to get youstarted.

With all that said, you'll also need to recognize your barriers to actually starting down the roadof entrepreneurship. Here's a list of the top 4 excuses people give for not making more money:

No time

No money

No expertise

No ideas

When you reflect on why you haven't started exploring how to earn more money, probablyevery one of your barriers (excuses!) falls into one of the above categories. You might say toyourself:

"Starting a business is too complicated." Nope. That's the "no expertise" excuse.

"But I work insane hours, have eleventeen kids, and a 4-hour commute." Granted, you mighthave limitations on your time, but you'll always make time for the things that are mostimportant. And 20-30 minutes a day is something you can carve out–especially if it'll changeyour life.

"But I don't have $10 grand to fund a business." OK, go back to the top of the article and re-read it. Done? OK. Repeat after me: "I can start a business for under $100." Say it again. Andagain. Know that there are many ways to do any task. Sometimes the first thing that comes tomind is some high-falutin', expensive way. Dig deeper. Focus on exactly what the outcome is,and brainstorm all the crazy ways you could get to it. I guarantee you'll find ways to get itdone on the cheap.

"But I don't have any ideas for a business." Try this: train yourself to look for problems. That'sright — look for problems throughout the day, every day. Jot them down in a mber that every problem is an opportunity. Successful, sustainable businesses solveproblems. Don't want to cook dinner? Go to a restaurant. Problem solved. Hate to iron yourclothes? Take them to a dry cleaner. Problem solved. Want to find & stay in touch withfriends? Join Facebook. Problem solved. (You get the idea.)

It'll take hard work, but the payoff is worth it

Starting and building a successful business takes hard work. But since you're reading this, youand I both know you have an urge for something better. You daydream at work about quittingyour job. You curse your commute and wish you could ditch your day job. You feel stuck at ajob you hate.

While starting a business may not solve all your problems, it can give you a completely newworldview that's empowering and full of possibilities. It took me a long time to get past mymental barriers and excuses before I started my own business, but when I began taking action,I started seeing things change. A few years down the road, I earn much more, have morefinancial security, more flexibility, and have no reason to complain about work. It's been anamazing turnaround.

And while I've learned a thing or two about how to do things on the cheap since I started mybusiness, I was still able to start my business inexpensively–and so can you. Now though, youhave the advantage of tons more free and low-cost tools for starting your business. The mostimportant things in your toolbox are a bootstrapping mindset, a focus on experimentation, and providing value.

Building a business around solving a chronic female health-care problem

RATAN JADHAV, a shy, slight woman in her 30s, works on a farm in Osmanabad, a remotepart of the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Her tiny mud-brick house boasts such modernconveniences as a computer bought with a loan from relatives, while arranged neatly on thekitchen window sill are her teenage daughter's cosmetics.

Yet when it comes to personal hygiene, both women prefer a cotton rag to a branded sanitarypad.

Why buy one, asks the mother, when a homespun substitute does the job?

Ms Jadhav is one of300mmenstruating Indian women who eschew sanitary pads in favour ofrags, dry leaves, straw or newspapers.

AC Nielsen, a research firm, says that 70% of women in India cannot afford sanitary products.

Many who can pay do not, as they hate having to ask for them in drugstores that are usuallyrun by men.

This has serious consequences.

Adolescent girls miss up to 50 days of school a year.

Some 23% drop out altogether.

Working women lose their daily wages.

The social and economic benefits to be had from resolving this problem are potentially solarge that doing so is now a focus of social entrepreneurs in many developing countries.

They include Jaydeep Mandal and Sombodhi Ghosh of Aakar Innovations, a Delhi-based start-up.

They have developed a machine that produces low-cost sanitary napkins using as raw materialsagri-waste such as banana fibre, bamboo and water-hyacinth pulp.

Each machine can churn out 1,600-2,000 pads a day, to be sold for 40% less than brandedmass-market products.

To bypass the current female-unfriendly distribution system, Aakar aims to sell its machinesfor 250,000 rupees a time to groups of women.

The finished item will be sold door-to-door by village saleswomen who also hawk solar lamps, stoves and saris.

It will be distributed, too, in women-run grocery stores and beauty parlours.

Aakar hopes to profit by selling the raw materials and the machines.

This is hardly a new idea.

Arunachalam Muruganantham, another Indian entrepreneur, is a pioneer of low-cost padmanufacturing.

Gandhigram, a non-profit organisation in Tamil Nadu, has developed similar technology inpartnership with engineers at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras.

Goonj, an NGO, sews and sterilises discarded old clothes into sanitary pads.

Many start-ups process cotton fibre from old knitwear into pads.

Mr Muruganantham reckons that the country is awash with hundreds of local brands.

Yet, unusually, Aakar's product meets the standards of the Western world and can competewith all global brands, says Ronald van het Hof of Women on Wings, a Dutch-basedconsultancy focused on creating jobs for women.

After studying sanitary-pad markets in four states, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra and TamilNadu, the Dutch outfit decided to help Aakar grow.

Aakar's founders see a big opportunity.

Aakar

Despite the challenges, the 13.5 billion rupee sanitary-pad industry in India is growing fast.

Established firms, including global giants such as Procter & Gamble, hold sway in townsand cities, though still only 25% of women use their products.

In the countryside the proportion is lower still.

By bypassing middlemen and using existing rural retail networks the founders believe they canwin6mcustomers and provide direct employment to 11,000 women in the next five years.

Yet many similar ventures have failed due to problems ranging from a lack of standardisation toinadequate saleswomen.

Aakar has forged a partnership with Swayam Shikshan Prayog, an NGO in Osmanabad which willbe responsible for manufacture and distribution.

It will also promote awareness by asking local doctors and health-care workers to push thepads at workshops and monthly village gatherings.

A start will be made next month in Osmanabad, with the aim of catering to about 20,000women.

This may reveal whether the pad has genuine appeal in India's hinterland.

It surely will, says Devkanya Jagdale, leader of a group of local saleswomen.

And Ratan Jadhav will be my first customer.
