Yang Jian was the regent(摄政王) of the last king of Northern Zhou(557-581). His wife advised him: "Northern Zhou is dying. Now it is as if you are riding on the back of a tiger. It will be dangerous to dismount(下马，下车) . You can do nothing but continue." Yang Jian thought this quite reasonable. Later, he founded the Sui Dynasty, and united China once more.

骑虎难下典故：晋朝时期，镇守历阳的将领苏峻和祖约以诛杀朝廷奸臣为名，率领军队进入都城建康，把持了朝中大权。
江州刺史温峤(qiáo)听说叛军在都城作乱，立刻挺身而出，拥戴征西大将军陶侃为盟主，起兵讨伐叛军。由于叛军人多势众，陶侃接连吃了几次败仗，有些沉不住气了，开始埋怨温峤过高估计了自己的实力。溫峤说：“战胜叛军的关键在于队伍的团结，而不能是一盘散沙。 当年刘秀救昆阳，曹操战官渡不都是团结一致，以少胜多的典范吗?叛军只凭一时气盛攻占了都城，他们利欲熏心，是一群乌合之众，只要我们团结努力，就一定能战胜他们。现在国难当头，我们仗义讨伐叛军，顺人心，合民意，决不能后退。这就好比骑在老虎身上，如果，不把它打死，怎么能半途从它身上跳下来呢?”
陶侃听了温峤的话，觉得很有道理，重新树立了作战信心。他和溫峤仔细商议对策，从水陆两路进攻，终于打败了叛军。
骑虎难下意思：骑在老虎背上不能下来。比喻做一件事情继续下去有困难，但情况又不允许中途停止，陷于进退两难的境地。
关于经典的小学英语故事：黔驴技穷In ancient times there were no donkeys in Guizhou province. Somebody brought a donkey from somewhere and tied it to a tree at the foot of a mountain.
过去贵州(黔)这个地方没有驴。有个多事的人用船运来了一头驴，运来后却没有什么用处，就把驴放到山脚下。
A tiger saw the donkey, and thought that it must be a fearsome(可怕的) monster. It hide behind a tree and spied on the donkey.

When the donkey brayed(叫) , the tiger was frightened, thinking that the donkey was about to devour(吞食，毁灭) it. After a while, seeing that the donkey had not moved, the tiger approached it and teased it. The donkey became angry, and kicked the tiger.
有一天，驴叫了一声，大虎大吃一惊，远远躲开，以为驴要咬自己了，非常恐惧。然而，老虎反复观察以后，觉得驴并没有什么特殊本领，而且越来越熟悉驴的叫声了。老虎开始走到驴的前后，转来转去，还不敢上去攻击驴。以后，老虎慢慢逼近驴，越来越放肆，或者碰它一下，或者靠它一下，不断冒犯它。驴非常恼怒，就用蹄子去踢老虎。

老虎心里盘算着：“你的本事也不过如此罢了!”非常高兴。于是老虎腾空扑去，大吼一声，咬断了驴的喉管，啃完了驴的肉，才离去了。
This idiom is used to mean that one has exhauseted one's skills.

战国时，楚平王的太子建有两个老师，一个是伍奢，一个是费无忌。费无忌得到楚平王的宠爱，可是他又怕太子登位后会对他不利，于是他便诬告太子。没想到平王竟然相信，还把太子调到边关去。但是费无忌还是不放心，担心太子找机会报复，因此他又将伍奢囚禁，并且派人杀害太子。
心狠的费无忌还不愿罢休，他想到伍奢有两个儿子，于是他又派人杀害了伍奢和他的大儿子，只有伍奢的小儿子伍员逃走了。平王听信费无忌的谎言，认为伍员是叛徒，因此下令追捕伍员。伍员为了逃命，一夜之间头发胡子全白了。后来他逃到了吴国，帮助吴王，建议派兵攻打楚，经过五次战争，终于打到楚国都城，这时平王已死，伍员为了报杀父兄之仇，便挖出平王的尸体，亲自鞭尸。伍员的老朋友知道之后便责备他。伤心的伍员对他说：“我像一个走路的人，此时天色已晚，但是路却很远，所以会做些违背常理的事。”
