Mr Macron’s poaching of Mr Philippe to lead his government was announced on his first full day in office, shortly before he flew to Berlin for a meeting with Angela Merkel, the German chancellor.

Less than a month before vital legislative elections, the defection of Mr Philippe is a new blow to the conservative Republican party, which hopes to win a parliamentary majority to force Mr Macron to adopt its agenda.

The party’s presidential nominee, Fran?ois Fillon, was engulfed in an embezzlement scandal and failed to make it through to the final round of the presidential election.

46岁的菲利普呼应了马克龙的超越法国传统的左/右翼分歧的努力，在正式交接班时赞扬了他的社会党(Socialist)前任伯纳德?卡泽纳夫(Bernard Cazeneuve)。

Mr Philippe, 46, echoed Mr Macron’s effort to transcend France’s traditional left-right split by praising his Socialist predecessor, Bernard Cazeneuve, at the formal handover of office.

“You’re a man of the left, I’m a man of the right, and yet, we respect each other, and we know that the common interest must guide our [political] commitment,” he said. Mr Macron is hoping Mr Philippe will help him win a majority for his new La République en Marche party in parliamentary elections on June 11 and 18 by attracting Republican voters.

So far it has been easier for Mr Macron to attract politicians from the Socialist party, which was humiliated in the presidential election when its candidate came a distant fifth.
