Christophe: OK, Aiste, we're going to talk about environmental issues in Europe. So, doesLithuania have environmental issues?

Aiste: Oh, actually were are facing kind of a big problem. The Baltic Sea that's besidesLithuania. You know three Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, together withScandinavian and Denmark are close to the Baltic Sea that's very isolated and almost has nocontact with the ocean and because of that it functions almost like a lake so it means theoxygen can't really get into it and there are a lot of algae growing and the eutrophication andtogether pollution as well as nutrients increase due to the factories that are around the placewhere people live are causing a lot of problems in Baltic Sea.

Christophe: Eutrophication? What does that mean?

Aiste: Eutrophication is actually a process when due to the increase nitrates and other organicmaterials, a lot of algae starts growing in the sea, and therefore it deprives the sea of oxygenand once it deprives the seas of oxygen, no more fish can live in the sea and they start dyingout. Therefore the sea smells with kind of sulphur — strange smell — and it's a huge problembecause the biodiversity and the fish and the in the sea decreases.

Christophe: Wow! That sounds horrible.

Aiste: What about Belgium? Do you have any problems in Belgium do the environment?

Christophe: Well, first of all we have a lot of people living in a very small country. I think wehave around four hundred people each square kilometer, so it means that there are too manypeople in my country. Everything is full of houses, so there's almost no forest any e's a real huge problem of deforestation. The second problem is that we have a lot ofrivers that are polluted. We have many factories and they're polluting our rivers because wehave a lot rivers in Belgium. Remember, it is raining there a lot of times and there justdumping all their stuff in the river so this causes rivers that have no fish anymore, or wherechildren cannot swim in anymore, so that's a very, very huge problem in Belgium and we'retrying to solve that now.

Jess: So, Tom, I was reading in the newspaper this morning, and I noticed a story which saidthat Tokyo and Osaka are now the most expensive cities to live in. I remember you told me youused to live in Tokyo. Was that your experience of living there?

Tom: That's right. Tokyo was really expensive. I am so pleased that now I live in ng here is fantastic. My apartment — I have this lovely beautiful big apartment and therent is a good deal. Thai food is famous all over the world and actually when you come toThailand, you realize how cheap the food is and how available it is. You can buy food — everykind of food from any shop or restaurant — even on the street. They have street stalls wherepeople cooking. They have people walking up and down the street pushing carts full of food andit's all really cheap and delicious. I like to go shopping in Bangkok. There's a lot of clothes andshoes and bags. The prices are really low and it's this lovely feeling being able to walk aroundand afford things. Did you know in Tokyo the most surprising expensive thing was getting a haircut. I don't go much for expensive hair cuts and it used to kill me how much I had to pay justto get someone to chop off my scruffy locks. I know you've lived in Europe mostly. What wasyour experience? What was the most expensive place in Europe?

Jess: Well, I've lived in three European cities: Budapest, Madrid and Paris and of the three Pariswas definitely the most expensive. The things that stands out in my mind as being the mostexpensive were beauty services. Things like hair cuts, hair coloring, facials, waxing. I actuallyhad to save and budget every month to make sure I was able to afford in Paris the the things Iwas used to getting without thinking about back home in Britain, but not every thing wasexpensive there. Beauty services were and rent was but the wine, brilliant French wine, wasreally cheap and there was a huge variety, so in that way, I guess it balanced itself out.
