slave是“奴隶，苦工”的意思，driver有“驱赶者”的意思，slave-driver就是“把人当奴隶使的人”，也就是“很苛刻的人”。

raise 在这里的意思就是“（工资，薪金）的提升，增加”；

be behind in就是“在……方面落后”的意思，

例如：He had been ill for a long time and consequently he was behind in his work.
他病了很久，因此耽误了功课。
