英文中与“cake”相关的表达方式

早从19世纪开始，人们习惯将蛋糕cake来当作比赛奖品。因而，随着时间的演变，a piece of cake引申为“容易得到的东西”。

还有一种说法，是指在西方的饮食文化中，甜点、蛋糕的地位不可或缺。我们可以在任何一餐、任何一个咖啡馆里看到各式各样的蛋糕甜品，可以说蛋糕是他们的“生活必需品”。所以，a piece of cake在西方是非常容易就可以得到的啦!

说起蛋糕，最经典的莫过于水果蛋糕了，让人不禁直译成“fruit cake”，但是其英文解释为“a cake containing dried fruit”。这里的“dried fruit”指的是“干果”，也就是我们平时常吃的葡萄干、草莓干、香蕉干等等水果干，不是新鲜水果。

“fruit cake”的另外一层含义则与蛋糕毫无关系了，“an offensive word for a person who behaves in a strange or crazy way”，即“疯子;怪人”。

关于这个意思，英语中还有一个俚语表达：be (as) nutty as a fruitcake 是个怪人;是个疯子。这个表达起源于20世纪30年代，“nutty”的意思是“疯狂的;愚蠢的;怪异的”。

如果一定要说蛋糕，为了避免引起歧义，直接说“cake”就可以，或者在“fruit cake”前面加上“fresh”，表示鲜果蛋糕。

“sell like hot cakes”，其英文解释为：to be bought quickly or in great numbers，即非常抢手，非常畅销。

“take the cake”，拿走蛋糕?可不是字面意思这么简单。其英文解释为：to be the most surprising, annoying, etc. thing that has happened or that somebody has done，即极其讨厌;十分惊人。

'have your cake and eat it (too)' ，其英文解释为：to have the advantages of something without its disadvantages; to have both things that are available，两者兼得。
